Luul Jeylaani Ali, a renowned figure in Somali music and a beloved singer, has died in Minneapolis, Minnesota, after a prolonged illness. Her passing on Monday night leaves behind a remarkable legacy that has influenced generations within Somali culture.

The news of Jeylaani’s death has sparked a wave of sorrow and tributes from the Somali community around the globe. Artists, politicians, and fans have come together to honor her memory, recognizing her as a pioneering force whose voice resonated deeply with the nation and represented the essence of Somali artistry.

Somali TV of Minnesota posted on their Facebook page in Somali Language and translates to, “May Allah have mercy on the Somali National Singer Luul Jaylaani, who recently passed away in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Luul Jaylaani was one of the Somali singers who was famous for singing Banadiri songs and performing plays that reflected the life and culture of the Banadiri community. May Allah have mercy on the singer. May God grant her family, relatives, and the entire Somali nation patience and faith.”

Jeylaani was particularly celebrated for her work in Banaadiri music, enchanting audiences with classic tracks like “Ebadkaa Ogow Ishaada Meesha U Roon,” “Riixaanta Janaad,” and “Beerkaad Iiga Taalla.” Her songs, known for their haunting melodies and poignant lyrics, are cherished cultural staples among Somalis everywhere. She also collaborated with notable musicians such as Aweys Qamiis, Ahmed Naajid Saad, and Ahmed Falaash, and her exceptional voice has been described as unmatched in Somalia’s vibrant musical landscape.

Born in Somalia, Jeylaani gained fame during the 1970s and 1980s, becoming a prominent figure through her extensive recordings and performances. However, like many artists of her time, she fled the country in the early 1990s due to the collapse of the central government, eventually settling abroad. In 2018, she made a triumphant return to Somalia, a moment celebrated as a powerful symbol of resilience and reconnection for a nation still healing from years of conflict.
