Texas Governor Greg Abbott has classified the Council on American-Islamic Relations as a foreign terrorist organization, leading the group to consider a lawsuit and raising concerns about growing Islamophobia.

The Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) announced on Tuesday that it might sue Texas Governor Greg Abbott after he labeled the organization as a foreign terrorist and criminal group. CAIR, which is the largest Muslim advocacy group in the U.S., accused Abbott of trying to take advantage of rising Islamophobia to boost his political image. Robert S. McCaw, CAIR’s director of government affairs, stated that Abbott does not have the power to simply declare any Americans or American organizations as terrorists.

In a statement, CAIR said, “While we appreciate Governor Abbott’s attention to our civil rights organization, his proclamation is just a publicity stunt without any real basis in law or fact, and it won’t stop our work for civil rights.” They also warned that they are prepared to take legal action if Abbott tries to turn his announcement into actual policy. The governor’s declaration also included increased enforcement against CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood, preventing them from buying land in Texas.

Abbott claimed that both CAIR and the Muslim Brotherhood are trying to force Sharia law on people and take over the world. He said, “The actions of the Muslim Brotherhood and CAIR to support terrorism and undermine our laws through violence, intimidation, and harassment are unacceptable.”

This situation comes at a time when Islamophobia is on the rise in the U.S., with negative portrayals of Muslims and Islamic organizations becoming more common. Many Muslims and their supporters worry that such government actions create a hostile environment, leading to increased discrimination and fear. Advocacy groups argue that calling organizations like CAIR terrorists misrepresents their goals and threatens the safety and rights of American Muslims.
