Amid a vibrant rally at the Brian Cole Community Center, Omar Fateh formally launched his campaign for mayor, receiving strong support from local leaders and community members while highlighting his vision for equitable opportunities and addressing pressing city challenges.
On December 19, 2024, over 300 supporters gathered at the Brian Cole Community Center from 6 PM to 8 PM to show their backing for Senator Omar Fateh as he officially launched his campaign for the mayoralty of Minneapolis. The evening began with a heartfelt prayer and welcoming remarks delivered by a Native American leader, creating an atmosphere of unity and shared purpose.
Throughout the rally, speakers highlighted Fateh’s integrity and exemplary leadership qualities. Parks and Recreation Commissioner Becky Alper from District 3 praised Fateh as a “bridge builder,” emphasizing his role as a compassionate leader. She stated, “Omar Fateh is not just a politician; he is a leader who reaches across jurisdictions with empathy and positivity.”
Minneapolis School District board member Adriana Cerrillo echoed these sentiments, underscoring the urgent need for equitable opportunities in Minnesota, especially for immigrant communities. She expressed her commitment to ensuring Fateh’s election and criticized the mayor’s recent veto of a bill aimed at providing much-needed support for children in need.
Several city council members, including Jason Chavez, Jamal Osman, and Robin Wonsley, attended the event to voice their support for Fateh’s candidacy. Osman pointed out the shortcomings of the current city leadership, stating, “It has been challenging to work with the mayor.” He further emphasized his support for Fateh, declaring, “Omar Fateh has my full support because we need a leader who treats all of us equally.”
Chavez reinforced this message by noting Fateh’s advocacy for public housing bills and his support for Native American land rights. Wonsley commended Fateh’s courage, stating, “He is not afraid to use his voice, even when faced with opposition.”
The highlight of the evening was Fateh’s passionate speech, where he officially kicked off his campaign for mayor. He addressed the audience, saying, “We have many problems, and elected officials often leave us behind. The status quo is failing us, and we deserve leadership that prioritizes the people’s interests.”
In his address, Fateh showcased a number of his legislative accomplishments, which include free tuition for students earning $80,000 or less and a strong commitment to clean energy initiatives. He spoke about the Saving Minneapolis 2040 project, the passage of a 100% clean energy bill aimed at fostering a cleaner environment, the legalization of fentanyl testing strips, and legislation supporting Uber and Lyft drivers. He asked the crowd soliciting their support, “Are you ready to bring that kind of leadership to City Hall?” The audience responded with an enthusiastic eruption of cheers.
Fateh further energized the crowd, asking, “Are you ready to fight? Are you ready to vote for me?” The audience responded enthusiastically, raising their fists in support and chanting his name.
As the 2025 election year approaches, tensions between the mayor and the city council continue to rise over budgetary issues. The council made 71 amendments to Mayor Jacob Frey’s 2025 budget before passing it and sending it back to him for signature. In his veto, Frey characterized the council’s budget as “reckless” and asserted that it would “increase property taxes for years to come.”
With all city council seats and the mayor’s office up for election in November 2025, the ongoing discord between Mayor Frey and the progressive city council members remains a significant focus.
