The Puntland Diaspora community in Minnesota has publicly expressed its strong support for the Puntland government and its military forces following the successful completion of Phase One of their military campaign against ISIS militants. Known as Operation Hilaac, this operation has reportedly delivered a significant blow to the extremist group in the Al-Miskaad mountains and Tog Jeceel valley of the Bari region.

Puntland, officially recognized as the Puntland State of Somalia, is an autonomous region that was established in 1998. Often referred to as the mother of federalism in Somalia, Puntland is located in the northeastern part of the country, with its capital in the city of Garoowe in the Nugal region.

In a recent press release, the Minnesota Diaspora community congratulated the Puntland government, its Defense Forces, and the people of Puntland for reclaiming strategic territories and dismantling key strongholds of ISIS, thereby weakening the group’s operational capacity in the Horn of Africa.

U.S. Africa Command has provided aerial support for the ongoing operation to eradicate the Islamic State from the Puntland region. A brief statement from U.S. Africa Command noted, “In coordination with the Federal Government of Somalia, U.S. Africa Command conducted airstrikes against ISIS-Somalia on February 1, 2025.” The command’s preliminary evaluation indicated that several ISIS-Somalia operatives were killed in the airstrikes, with no reported civilian casualties.

The Puntland Diaspora community expressed heartfelt condolences to the families of soldiers who lost their lives in the conflict, emphasizing that their bravery and sacrifice will not be forgotten. They highlighted that the success of Operation Hilaac represents a pivotal moment in Somalia’s ongoing fight against terrorism by denying ISIS crucial access to supply routes and safe havens.

In light of these developments, the Minnesota Diaspora community has held several meetings to discuss its role in supporting Puntland’s efforts to eradicate ISIS. The following key points were outlined in their statement:

  1. Celebration of Achievements: The community commended Puntland forces for their exceptional capabilities, particularly in intercepting explosive-laden drones used by ISIS for surveillance and attacks, marking a significant victory in countering the group’s evolving tactics.
  2. Call for Humanitarian Aid: An urgent appeal was made for humanitarian assistance to support affected communities and stabilize reclaimed areas. The community emphasized the need for prioritized services, including healthcare, education, and access to clean water for displaced families.
  3. Gratitude to the U.S. Government: The diaspora expressed appreciation to the U.S. government, particularly under President Trump, for timely airstrikes targeting senior ISIS leaders, noting that no civilian lives were lost during these operations. They urged continued U.S. support for Puntland in its fight against ISIS.
  4. Criticism of Somalia’s Federal Government: The community expressed disappointment over the Federal Government of Somalia’s politicization of Puntland’s military efforts, alleging that it has denied Puntland resources intended to enhance security. They criticized the FGS for misrepresenting the successes of Puntland’s campaign.
  5. Call for Unity: Finally, the Minnesota Diaspora community urged all Somali people to unite in support of Puntland’s government and its Defense Forces in their fight against ISIS, calling for both material and moral support to eradicate terrorism.

As the situation evolves, the Puntland Diaspora community remains dedicated to supporting their homeland in its critical fight against extremism and promoting regional stability.
