MINNEAPOLIS — Eleven months ahead of the 2025 elections, Senator Omar Fateh officially launched his campaign for Mayor of Minneapolis. During a press conference at City Hall, he criticized Mayor Jacob Frey’s administration for its shortcomings in addressing critical issues such as public safety, housing, and environmental justice. Despite these challenges, Fateh adopted an optimistic tone, emphasizing the hard work of Minneapolis residents and their right to a city that works as diligently as they do.
First elected to the Minnesota State Senate in 2020, Fateh has authored and passed several impactful bills, including the North Star Promise Act, which aims to provide affordable college education, and legislation ensuring fair wages for Uber and Lyft rideshare drivers. He has also secured over $300 million in state funding for local public safety agencies across Minnesota.
In his remarks, Fateh articulated his vision for Minneapolis, stating, “I’m running for Mayor to work with you to achieve the vibrant, loving city we know Minneapolis can be. For working people, it’s becoming harder to build our lives here. Mayor Frey and the status quo are failing Minneapolis residents. We deserve leadership that makes it so people want to live here, raise families here, and start businesses here. I’m committed to building a city that works for everyone.”
He continued, “Serving in the Minnesota Senate, I’ve seen firsthand what a progressive legislature can achieve with the right executive. As Mayor, I will collaborate with the progressive City Council to create tangible wins for our neighbors and uplift those who are struggling. Minneapolis is full of individuals ready to invest in long-term solutions that will bring security and stability to our communities. Residents work hard for the city we love, and we deserve a Mayor who works as hard as we do.”
Before Fateh took the stage, he was introduced by Aidan Thomsen, a University of Minnesota student, who praised the Senator’s dedication to the community. “I have seen how Senator Fateh is ready to fight for all working people and take on corporate interests and lobbyists. Thanks to his leadership on the North Star Promise Act, I can afford my tuition this year without being burdened by lifelong debt. That kind of policy is life-changing for many of us and exemplifies how Senator Fateh puts people first.
